Sri Lankan Passport are normally issued with 10 years validity, when the current passport has expired or when the visa pages have been exhausted. Applicants are advised to submit applications for new passports well in advance, at least 6 months before the date of expiry of current passport.

Applicants are kindly requested to read the following information

◾Application forms for New Passports can be download from the Embassy website .

 
◾Regular passports are issued only by the Controller, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Colombo. Usually it takes approximately three (03) months to issue a passport. If the Department desires to send the Birth Certificate and/or NIC to the relevant authorities for veryfication, the application process might take longer period.


◾Once the new passport is received from the Controller General/Immigration and Emigration, Colombo, the applicant will be notified by phone or email.
  

◾Current passport should be submitted to the Embassy when the new passport is collected at the Embassy. It will be cancelled and returned to the applicant, together with the new passport.
  

◾If the applicant wants to obtain his/her new passport by post, applicant has to send the old passport for the cancellation and deposit postal charges to the Embassy Bank Account. However, the Embassy is not responsible for any documents lost or damages in the post.
  

◾Please note that submission of forged documents such as Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, National Identity Card and Professional Certificates, or making false declarations and documents relating to the visa or citizenship status is an offence and no refund of fees is possible in such instances.
  
◾As per the regulations of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, persons who has claimed and gained refugee or asylum status from a foreign country are not entitled for a Sri Lankan passport and if such a person wishes to return to Sri Lanka an NMRP will be issued.
 

Special Notice

The Department of Immigration and Emigartion has been introduced a new procedure to capture the fingerprints of passport holders whose passport has been issued through Sri Lanka Diplomatic Missions after 1st November 2017. The procedure requires every passport holder who are in the age group of 16-60 years to provide Biometrics (fingerprints and digital face image) to the Department of Immigartion and Emigration upon their first entry to Sri Lanka.
